LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY GENERAL

Dear distinguished delegates,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the 11th edition of the Mayo College Girls’ School Model United Nations. As the Secretary-General of this prestigious gathering, I am honoured to be able to preside over this conference and witness the passion and intellect that each one of you will bring to the table.

The MCGSMUN is a signature event hosted by our school. It is one of the most awaited events of the year for delegates all across the country and our students. It is an honour to be able to work with my secretariat to produce yet another enlightening conference.
The moral arc of the universe, as Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, bends towards justice. However, the current state of world affairs and international relations present significant challenges to this moral arc. One of the most pressing issues facing humanity today is the rising trend of ‘nationalism’ and populism, and how in the name of nationalism we welcome imperialism and in the name of anti nationalists we suppress our very own people. These ideologies often prioritise narrow self-interest over the common good, leading to increased tensions between nations and communities, and undermining international cooperation and solidarity.
As Max Ehrmann very rightly said, “Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture the strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings”, so to “reconstruct the moral arc”, we need to reject these ideologies and embrace a more inclusive, compassionate, and empathetic approach to global affairs, and require a fundamental shift in attitudes, values, and actions, towards a more benevolent, inclusive, and responsible approach to global issues.
It is only through such an effort that we can ensure a brighter future for humanity and bend the moral arc towards justice. This year's conference promises to be an exciting one, with a diverse range of topics and committees that are sure to challenge and engage all participants. As we come together to discuss the world's most pressing issues, I encourage you to approach each discussion with an open mind and a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.Throughout the conference, I urge you to work collaboratively with your fellow delegates and strive to find common ground, even in the face of disagreement. By doing so, we can create a space for meaningful and impactful debate that will ultimately lead to a positive change.I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to our MUN coordinator, Mrs. Rashmi Thakur, for constantly guiding us through the whole process. I would also like to thank all the members of the secretariat without whom this conference would not have been possible.
Warm Regards,
Pari Shah.

LETTER FROM THE MUN-COORDINATOR

Dear Change makers,

Keeping up with the tradition of Model United Nations in Mayo College Girls School, after much deliberation with the secretariat on collapse of common values, ethical vacuum, immoral public policy, wars and sufferings, gender bias and obsolete educational values among other, the focus on coping with disintegrating value systems, revamping outmoded values, focus on societal re-education and re-motivating each individual in the possibility of seeing his or her life as significant in the post-modern scientific age seemed most pertinent. "Reconstructing the Moral Arc" was therefore the outcome of deep thinking and deliberation by the young and vibrant secretariat who wanted to make a viable difference.

Sometimes certain things are beyond human comprehension. I wondered why the raging blazes in the heart of the Amazon bothers us even though it's on a different continent? Why should the rainbow movement matter to those who only see the world in black and white? Do women fighting for freedom from patriarchal value systems and equal rights in Iran make a difference to our existence here? Why should reinforced parochialism and moral pretension and indifference to sufferings and wars affect our thinking and action in any way?

The answer to all these questions is a resounding yes- it matters. To be human is no longer to see the world through an exclusivist perspective. It is to embrace every pattern in mankind's tapestry because every strand weaves us into our collective co-existence.

There is no such thing as a purely economic crisis or material crisis. The crisis in values is at the root of all issues. The present world crisis, including increasing crime, drugs, the widening gulf between rich and poor, the destruction of the environment, the population explosion and the impotence of the governments, are examples of worldwide erosion of philosophical and moral guidance in the conduct and interpretation of life. Progress in technology and science must be accompanied by a deeper understanding of human nature, morality and the natural world.

As bright minds will gather at the MCGSMUN 2023 to debate these issues and take steps in this direction, I hope they carry back a learning experience which is truly unmatched.

Warm Regards,

Rashmi Thakur
