UN COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

AGENDA: Promoting Women’s leadership and gender responsive parliaments

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the sole international intergovernmental body that promotes gender equality and women's empowerment. The CSW plays a significant role in promoting women's rights, documenting the condition of women's living worldwide, and establishing global standards on gender equality and women's empowerment. The Commission's key aim would be to emphasize the significance of gender equality, to sensitize, and to foster empathy for others.

Women’s equal participation and leadership in political and public life are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. However, data show that women are underrepresented at all levels of decision-making worldwide.  The five most commonly held portfolios by women ministers are: Family/children/youth/elderly/disabled; followed by Social affairs; Environment/natural resources/energy; Employment/labor/vocational training, and Women affairs/gender equality. At the current rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power will not be reached for another 130 years. To conclude, the agenda for UNCSW will primarily focus on increasing the role of women in leadership areas.
